The Immigration Clinic of the University of Miami School of Law held a symposium, Immigration Law and Community, followed the next day by a training, Immigration Law and Deportation Defense: Intermediate and Advanced Topics, on October 29-30, 2010. The symposium addressed the themes of undocumented immigration and community, immigrant women, and Haiti and our Haitian community. Speakers and moderators included Hiroshi Motomura, Stephen Lee, David Abraham, Cheryl Little, Leti Volpp, Zanita Fenton, Ira J. Kurzban, and Irwin Stotzky.

The training was co-sponsored by Florida Immigrant Advocacy Center and National Immigration Project of the National Lawyers Guild. It was geared towards immigration practitioners who practice in the area of deportation defense. Panels include strategies for challenging deportation based on crimes, judicial and administrative review, federal court updates, ethical issues in deportation defense, Padilla v. Kentucky and post-conviction relief, and motions to suppress/terminate. Speakers and moderators included Dan Kesselbrenner, Romy Lerner, Allison Kent, Rebecca Sharpless, Tania Galloni, Lucas Guttentag, Lisette Losada, Ira J. Kurzban, Debbie Smith, Mary Gundrum, and Andrew Stanton.
